October Gemstones

October Birthstones - Tourmaline and Opal

Consider yourself lucky if you are born in October because you have the choice of not one, but two stunning birthstones. October is represented by a kaleidoscope of colour in both Tourmaline and Opal gemstones.

Opal

The word “opal” is derived from the Greek word opallios, which means “to see a change in colour.” In ancient times, the Opal was known as the ‘Queen of Gems’ because it has a tinge of every colour imaginable. As the light hits the Opal, the colours play and shift, creating a rainbow of hues. Just like fingerprints or a snowflake, every Opal is one-of-a-kind.

Opal

During the Middle Ages, Opals were considered to bring good luck as they were believed to possess all the virtues of every gemstone whose colour was represented in them. The Opal is also featured in many Dreamtime stories of Aboriginal Australians.

Australia is well known as a leader in the world’s supply of Opals and Lightning Ridge is the main source for the rare and stunning black Opals. The Opal is a perfect gem that can be worn with an array of ensembles.

Tourmaline

Tourmaline is classified as a semi-precious stone and no other gemstone boasts a greater spectrum of natural colours. Translating from a Sri Lankin word turomalli, tourmaline means the stone of mixed colours. It is believed to strengthen the body and thought to inspire creativity.

The colours can range from red, yellow, blue, green, purple, brown to black and can easily enhance any jewellery collection. Periodically more than one hue is present, as seen in the ‘Watermelon Tourmaline’, which has a stunning green exterior and gives way to the middle of pretty pink.

Two stones for one month

Each of these two stones representing the month of October is equally alluring and one does not exceed the other. Both gems can be traced back hundreds of years and with their unique colours and designs, make ideal creations to be worn throughout the year.

Zodiac Gemstones

With two zodiac signs falling in October; Libra and Scorpio, there is even a greater variety of gemstones to help celebrate the month.

For Libras (Sept. 23rd - Oct. 22nd), the Lapis Lazuli is one of their gemstones. A stone of universal truth and friendship, it also supports expressing your authentic self and inner truth. Lapis helps you access sacred knowledge, expand consciousness, and purify your mind and soul.
